Welcome

Welcome! I am Gabrielle, and… I edit!

I am an Associate Publisher and editor at Dragon Moon Press, a Canadian independent publisher of many flavors of fantasy and science fiction.

I am also a freelance copyeditor, and a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association. I am available for hire independently. A copyeditor can help make your written words as powerful and polished as they can be. Whether you’re writing a novel or short story for publication or submitting an article to a magazine, a professional editor’s careful time and attention can give your work the polished edge that it needs to compete in today’s market.

My blog updates twice weekly and is aimed toward writers, editors and freelancers.

I welcome questions (which I happily answer on my blog) and queries.

Please contact me with any questions or to discuss pricing structure.

The instructions for submitting to Dragon Moon Press are available on Dragon Moon’s Submissions Guidelines page. Please do not send me submissions for Dragon Moon Press through this site.

I specialize in fiction, with strong experience in science fiction and fantasy, but I also have experience with literary fiction, historical fiction, and nonfiction. Please visit the “Credits” tab above to see my published credits, my writing credits, interviews and other appearances.

My rates are charged per page. They are competitive with industry standards, and are based on such factors as document length, comprehensiveness of edits, and time limit. (See this post for more detail.)

FOR NOVELS, SHORT STORIES AND ARTICLES:

  • Proofreading – The most basic service an editor provides is simple proofreading to correct any errors in punctuation, spelling and grammar, and to impose a consistent industry-standard style. If you just need a fresh pair of eyes to catch any typos that might have gotten past your computer’s spellchecker, and to make sure that words are consistently spelled and hyphenated the whole way through, simple proofreading may be sufficient for you.
  • Copyediting – Copyediting expands on proofreading to include syntax and word choice suggestions for better readability and flow, as well as continuity checking to ensure internal consistency. This is the most commonly requested level of editing for the author whose concept is solid, to give the manuscript that professional polish to set it apart and make it shine.
  • Substantive Editing – Substantive editing expands on proofreading and copyediting to include indepth examination of the content itself. For fiction, this means delving deeply into plot, characters, structure, pace and theme; for nonfiction, the structure, comprehensibility and logical flow.

FOR AGENT/PUBLISHER QUERIES AND SUBMISSIONS:

  • Query and Pitch Consultation – It’s difficult to hook an editor or an agent on your story when you only have a sentence or two to make a first impression. Your query letter is like the cover letter that tells a prospective employer whether you’ll be a fit for their organization. As someone who receives submissions and is intimately familiar with them, I have written several in-depth posts on the subject in this blog. I invite you to read them and use them as a resource, and I accept questions and will answer them on the blog. You can hire me to proofread and copyedit your pitch letter. However, I cannot be hired to write your pitch or query for you. A lot of free, straightforward advice is available on this blog and on others, being able to follow guidelines and provide information within a requested structure is a skill every writer must cultivate in order to be successful.
